Serial Beginnings – Storm Moon Press

After three years of publishing, we at Storm Moon Press had thought we'd settled into a good rhythm. We knew what we wanted to do, what we wanted to publish, and how we would go about it all. A routine is great, and things run smoothly when you have one. However, when I find myself deeply mired in a routine, my brain wanders. My brain seeks something new and exciting to add to the familiar mix. I started thinking about the only aspect of fiction Storm Moon Press didn't offer, and then I sat down to figure out how to make it a reality.

Beginning in 2013, Storm Moon Press is publishing serial fiction. It's a new format for us, something we'd initially been utterly against, but with our current set up, we think readers will really enjoy what we'll have to offer.

In the spring, we'll have two serials to start off with, both urban fantasy. In Cambion: Dark Around the Edges by Cari Z, Devon is the child of an incubus and a human woman, and his life has been nothing but a struggle to control the seductive powers he possesses, but a demon has Devon in his sights, as Devon is the key the demon needs to leave Hell behind forever. And, in Immortal Symphony: Overture by S.L. Armstrong & K. Piet, Gabriel Lawrence―a psychic with a dead twin as his constant ghostly companion―becomes involved with the Dorian Gray and learns there is so much more to the world than just ghosts and spooks.

Both of these serials are, we hope, the first in a larger rotation. We have several other authors working on their serials for us, and we were happy to hear many readers were excited for the line. It took a year for us to come to this point, to have everything click into place, and it's something none of us had expected. But, with the unexpected come awesome opportunities, and it's been exciting and nerve-wracking all at the same time.

Serial fiction, though, is something new to us, and it's a beginning for us that we hadn't anticipated, and it's been a long road to this start. But, the first step has been taken. That's the hardest part, really, but it's done. We have a unique product with a one-of-a-kind format with a competitive price and incentives for our readers, and I think this was a great move for us. I hope our readers will join us, will love what our authors bring them in this format, and will keep coming back for more.

It's been a great three years, and we see many more in front of us, with plenty of new beginnings in store!

S.L. Armstrong is the Managing Editor for Storm Moon Press. She is also the co-author of Making Ends Meet and Other Side of Night: Bastian & Riley. S.L. can be found at www.slarmstrong.net or on Twitter @_slarmstrong.

    1. I used to avoid serials like the plague, and I even spoke out against them quite a lot. It took me quite some time to come up with something I found to be fair to publisher, author, and reader. I think it'll be a great medium for some stories (not right for all stories), and a lot of fun for the authors and readers. :)

    1. Thanks!

I know serials aren't for everyone, and I was very against them for a long time. But, several of our authors were incredibly excited about the format, and I think we've found a fair way to offer them to readers so they don't feel cheated. :D It's something new, and I know it won't be everyone's favorite, but I hope it converts some readers like it did me!

  12. omg.. I LOVE the cover!! lol...
The stories sound so good too.. but... hmm, I'm not a real big fan of serials.
All I can say is I hope it's not too expensive for "chapters" and that after the long haul it's not a bad ending. For serials, I really wish for more HEA or HFN than a regular book.

But.. I shall be giving them a try. :) I especially love how Cari Z's story sounds! LOL..

    1. Well, all the stories will follow our HFN/HEA requirement--at least by the end. A particular season may end at a heartbreaking moment, but that will only mean we've acquired the second season. :) The only time we would ever not have a HFN/HEA ending is if we mark the title (clearly!) as bittersweet.

We have a whole post about our pricing plan over here if you're interested!
